The Format of the 2014 Exam
The examination will be resource-based.
In 2014, the examination questions and resource booklet will focus on urbanization, urban settlements, and urban growth.
Some resource materials (such as maps, text, photographs, models, graphs, tables and cartoons) related to this theme will be provided, to assist candidates within this geographic context.
Candidates will be required to complete questions that involve selecting, extracting, analysing, processing, predicting, justifying, and presenting information. Candidates will be required to include relevant original visuals that will enhance their answers.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate understanding of a range of geographic perspectives and to use their geographic knowledge, skills, ideas, and understanding to support their answers.
Candidates should use coloured pencils in their diagrams / maps. Annotations on these diagrams / maps must be in pen. Any work done in pencil will not be eligible for reconsideration.
Definitions
Urbanization - the increasing number of people that live in urban areas. It predominantly results in the physical growth of urban areas
Urban settlements - Urban area, area with high density of human-created structures
Urban growth – how and why urban areas grow; impacts of this growth

Case Studies
To be able to do the Scholarship exam, you need to have a really good understanding of urban settlements all over the world. We will look at a number of case studies:

Task 6: Urban Models
It is important to be aware of the 3 main urban models - The Hoyt Model, the Burgess Concentric Theory and the Multiple Nuclei Theory. (you learnt about the Concentric Theory in Year 12 Geo in the 'crime in Chicago' topic).

Task 8: NYC, Moscow and Manila Read the articles below. One is on regeneration in New York City, one is on change in Moscow and the other one is on the impact of urbanisation with Manila as the example. think about the processes that have created these changes and why they have occurred.
